Darian's Trek: A Journey Through the Colorado Trail

The Colorado Trail is more than a hiking trail - it's a journey into the heart of the Rocky Mountains, an exploration of the self, and a testament to the power of nature. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a curious adventurer, the CT offers an unforgettable experience.

Outdoors enthusiasts meet Darian, a young lady with a zest for adventure, bracing herself for the challenge of a lifetime: through hiking the Colorado Trail.

Darian, an employee at Quest Outdoors, has developed a deep love for the wilderness and backpacking thanks to her boyfriend, Adam. She's chosen the Colorado Trail for its manageable commitment time, typically 4-6 weeks, compared to the Appalachian Trail's several-month commitment.

Her journey will commence in early July, starting in Denver's Waterton Canyon and ending in Durango. But before she hits the trail, we sat down with her to learn more about her preparation process, her gear, and the challenges she anticipates.

Preparing for the Challenge

Despite her excitement, Darian doesn't underestimate the challenges that lie ahead. She believes that the mental aspects of the trail – the constant push to keep going, the absence of a comfortable bed – will be her biggest test. Additionally, the altitude's effects on her physical health are a concern.

As she prepares for the trek, she's been educating herself about backpacking, learning everything from food resupply strategies to the use of iodine tablets for water purification. She's been using the FarOut app, a $20 interactive map of the entire trail, and studying guidebooks and YouTube videos to enhance her knowledge.

Gear and Nourishment

Darian's gear list is meticulously planned, bearing in mind the need to stay weight-conscious. She's decided to test both the Granite Gear Blaze 60 and the Osprey Aura 60 backpacks to decide which will accompany her. Her choice of footwear will be the Altra Olympus trail runners.

Her family might not be thrilled about her undertaking such a long hike, but Darian is determined to conquer the Colorado Trail. For staying in touch with her family, she's carrying the Garmin InReach Mini, which will allow her to send daily texts to her mom. When it comes to food, she's planning 4-5 day resupply intervals, with staples like mashed potatoes, rice, and pasta.  She will also have chicken and tuna packets, freeze dried fruit, oatmeal, and pastries.

She's chosen the Sawyer Squeeze for water filtration, along with iodine tablets as a backup. Her clothing selection includes wind/rain pants, an Outdoor Research lightweight hoody that's garnered good reviews, and a Buff for sun and wind protection.

Training and Practice Hikes

To acclimatize her body and mind for the long journey, Darian has been engaging in practice hikes at the Adventure Hiking Trail in O'Bannon Woods and the 60-mile Knobstone Trail. She also recently imparted her knowledge to other women during a backpacking clinic hosted by Quest Outdoors.

The Journey and Beyond

Despite the hurdles she expects to encounter, Darian looks forward to the mental health break that spending every day hiking will provide. She's also excited about the periodic time off she'll take in various locations along the trail to truly savor the experience.

After the journey ends in Durango, she's planning a relaxing stint at a hot springs resort before hopping onto a flight back home.  Darian's journey is a testament to the power of preparation and a love for the great outdoors. As she embarks on this incredible journey, we'll be rooting for her every step of the way.
